How to paint Space marine's face just using 8 colors.

This is painting guide to painting space marine's face just using 8 colors.
I using face of Custodian guard kit but you can any face of space marines.

Space marine's face is easier than other 28mm~32mm miniature-faces. Normally, bigger than others also not a massed like Bolt Action(Warlord games).

And Space marines' faces had just few of emotions. Angry or Anger than more. Sometimes just they are shut the mouth and glazing forward. So you don't need to change your painting style a lot.

in this article, I just using this 8 colors.

- CITADEL
FLAYED ONE FLESH
KISLEV FLESH
CADIAN FLESHTONE

DEVLAN MUD (Can replace to AGRAX EARTHSHADE)
REIKLAND FLESHSHADE

- Vallejo
344 White(Ger. Tank Crew)  (Can replace to SKULL WHITE or whatever White colors)
70.859 BLACK RED  (Can replace to RED GORE / KHORNE GORE)
72.051 Negro Black  (Can replace to CHAOS BLACK or whatever Black colors)

Some colors are vallejo but you can using only Citadel.(Because my Old Citadel paint is almost gone and I just replace paint-what-they-gone to Vallejo. local hobby-shop only sell Vallejo not Citadel. I use paint mainly Citadel.)

But, opposite is can not. You must use Citadel shade even you mainly using vallejo paint. Because Citadel shade is can not replace to others. Vallejo, AK, MIG whatever.

Color using
- 344 White(Ger. Tank Crew)

I'd like to spray surfacing but in this time, I surfacing just using white color paint and brush. When rainy day or you have no spray(or airbrush) then you can surfacing just using only brush.

Brush-surfacing is not easier than. Also even you using white color. Just surfaced like pictures then, that is done.

Point is 'Spread to paint'. No more, no less.

Color using
- 344 White(Ger. Tank Crew)
- 70.859 BLACK RED

Draw eyeball part once more to use White color. before using white color means Undercoat then, This action means drawing eyes, even using same white color.

And using darker red to paint to inner part of mouth.

* In this Picture, inner mouth looks pink not red but that's my mistake. White color of inner mouth part is not dry yet. You should to painting when all of paint is dry after.

Color using
- 72.051 Negro Black

Draw pupil. Point is 'Balance'. You make each eyes balanced. Just that's all.
We'll make to perfect by erase to fault.

Color using
- 72.051 Negro Black
- 344 White(Ger. Tank Crew)

Make shape of pupil to erase fault to use white color. If you erase too much then, Draw pupil to use black color again. If you draw pupil to bigger? then erase again.

Just doing again when you get the shape what you want to.

* If you got good shape before step then you can pass this step.

* This is good reference when you painting Space marine's face. They are always angry or more anger. They never calm.

Color using
- 70.859 BLACK RED

Draw outline of Eyes to red color. Point is outline of 'Eye'.
You get more natural eyes using red color than using black color.

* If your model is not open their mouth then, you can pass this step.

Color using
- 344 White(Ger. Tank Crew)

Draw teeth to white color.

Point is 'front of upper teeth'. When this two teeth is balanced then model looks gentle. But this is unbalanced then looks savage.

when you complete to draw then, use red color to draw outline of mouth and erase fault.

Color using
- CADIAN FLESHTONE

Draw outline of eyes and mouth to darker flesh color.
You must careful. Do not mistake in this step.

Color using

- CADIAN FLESHTONE

Painting whole of face except before step.

Color use

- REIKLAND FLESHSHADE 

Washing face whole of face part to shade, except eyes and mouth part.

Color using

- CADIAN FLESHTONE

First, draw outline of eyes. Orbit and Eyelid. 

Second, draw nose. When you open the mouth then, nose expanded to side.

And next, draw Zygoma and Horn-born(or Column) part of Forehead. Space marine had gigantic skull by surgery, So their skull-bone is bigger than normal human' skull)

* This layer is will be a main and general of face also basic part of face too. next step is just highlighting on this layer.

* If you can use Wet-blend technique then, you can draw more than two layer only using one color. I use Wet-blend technique in this article.

Color using

- KISLEV FLESH

- CADIAN FLESHTONE

Mix the darker flesh and flesh colors. and draw layer on them.

Point is same as before step. but you should to draw smaller area what you draw before layer.

Color using

- KISLEV FLESH

- REIKLAND FLESHSHADE

Highlight to use flesh color.

And use shade color small area of lower Eyelid to highlight and separate to Zygoma. and next draw highlighting layer on lower Eyelid.

Color using

- KISLEV FLESH

- FLAYED ONE FLESH

- REIKLAND FLESHSHADE

Mix the bright flesh and flesh colors. and Highlight all.

And use shade color on outline of decorations, to separate decoration part to face.

Color using

- FLAYED ONE FLESH

- REIKLAND FLESHSHADE

- DEVLAN MUD

Draw last of highlight to use bright flesh only.

and next use bright shade to outline of face. and after use darker shade again to separate face and not-a-face.

* If you want to more highlighting then, you can mix bright flesh and white paint to 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 ratio.

* If you want to draw tattoo like me then, use darker red.

Color using

- 72.051 Negro Black

Use black color to separate face and not-a-face.

Face-painting is complete.
